There are many different types of psychotherapy. Barbara Burrows practices insight based or psychodynamic psychotherapy which starts with the premise that there are important unrecognized reasons for self-defeating present day actions.
It can be used to address underlying tensions within often related to distress, symptoms ( headaches, digestive trouble, irritable bowel,) volatile emotions, panic attacks, depression, anxiety, insomnia, anorexia, etc. (i.e. mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse disorders).
Usually once or twice/week, insight based psychotherapy helps a patient identify the “psychological knots”, so that difficulties can be reworked. Some who have been relying on psycho-tropic medications may find they no longer need them. Most slowly feel less overwhelmed and get greater pleasure from relationships and become more productive at work or school. Within the therapy session the person sets the pace and determines the topic for discussion. The therapist does not offer advice but listens and tries to understand, offering interventions to help the person explore personal thoughts and feelings more deeply.
